| Talking with strangers |
[08 Jul 2008|09:59pm] |
|
I consider myself to be a pretty friendly and open person, but no matter what I do, it seems like I just am terrible at talking to strangers! I always feel awkward no matter what, even though I don't mean to. I do occasionally meet a person I feel comfortable with immediately, but that's a pretty rare thing. Does anyone else find that making good small talk is a huge obstacle in life?

| car registration, etc. |
[08 Jul 2008|10:24pm] |
OK, so I've seen a few posts on moving to Boston and how you have to register your car right away. However, what I haven't seen is if there's any need to change registration and such if the car is not registered to you.
I'm moving to MA to work and go to school, I will have off-street parking in my driveway. My car is registered to my mom. We were sort of wondering if I could not bother changing my registration-I'm not sure if I'm moving back to NY after I get my masters, and I don't see the point in doing so for 2 years if that's the case.
I really can't find any information about this, though I've been looking. Everything I've found is about registering cars that belong to you, since that is obviously the situation of most people who are moving to massachusetts. So does anyone have any information, or firsthand experience?

| All About Eve at the Brattle on tuesday the 15th |
[08 Jul 2008|10:11pm] |
Let's all go to the Brattle to see "All About Eve", one of my favorite movies, and a classic.
It's one of the AFI 100 best films, and it's one of the movies Roger Ebert things everyone should watch. Some of the best dialog on screen, and it even has one of Marilyn Monroe's earliest on screen appearances. It's genius, and you get to see it on the medium screen and support a great non-profit at the same time!
Movie starts at 7:30. Let me know ahead of time and get to my house by 5:30pm and I will even make you dinner (pasta and stuff).

| Gallery recommendations - and what kind of gallery is this? |
[08 Jul 2008|09:32pm] |
I am looking for a new gallery for my fansite, however, I am a bit sick of coppermine and 4images ( but I will use them if I can find anything else to work).
I want to know what gallery this site uses: http://downeyunlimited.com/gallery_misc2/01.htm <-- need a login to view pictures but just by looking at the general layout of the thumbnails and sections, does anyone know what kind of gallery it is and if its php based or not.
I do not want one that takes up a lot of space and also will not have duplicate images uploaded ( if that makes sense..not sure they do that)
And recommendations for other galleries would be fantastic!

got over to the condo tonight with grand plans to get a lot done! Got a lot done, just not what was on the list...
so there was this nasty 5' tall fake wood paneling in the kitchen which is covering up actual 100 year old (guestimate) genuine wood wainscotting. Why? Me no know. So after tearing it up around the center where we removed three walls, Prosicated and I decided that we should take it off the walls around the edges as well. I came over tonight to weedwhack the overgrown grass, rip that fake paneling off, and put a temporary floor in place. 2 out of three ain't bad? The plaster on the upper part of the wall behind the paneling was so crappy it basically fell off when I pulled off the paneling holding it in place, so instead of getting on to the floor I spend the rest of the evening drywalling up where the plaster had said bye-bye. Got it done, and it looks great, but I didn't get done everything I planned to. Oh, I also set up the dehumidifier in the basement. It's got a sensor as well, so now i know that we have 80% humidity down there. Mmm hmm, that was a wise investment that I was dubious about at the time. It's pouring water out the drain hole into the sink down there as we speak.
Whee! Did I mention that I love this shit?

| No, You Wouldn't, sex, drugs, and rock and roll edition |
[08 Jul 2008|05:13pm] |
You're doing it wrong:
[Nurse-Family Partnership supervisor Wanda Scott] said on average the health clinic sees between 25 to 30 pregnancies a month. She says five weeks after the festival that number jumps to almost 80 a month.
The festival ran from June 26-29. Performers included Tim McGraw, Clay Walker and Sugarland.
"That's our Grand Junction Woodstock," Scott said, referring to the 1969 counterculture rock festival in Bethel, N.Y., featuring such acts as Jimi Hendricks and Janis Joplin.
Grand Junction is a city of about 50,000 about 245 miles west of Denver.
Country Jam Director Steve Berg said the information surprised him.
"I certainly can't stop them from having sex. If we could stop it we certainly would," he said. —Pregnancies jump after Grand Junction Festival, Denver Post

My mind is a little muddled right now, so just to clarify:
There is no way in CSS to get a fixed-width design to expand only if needed. Meaning, have a layout be 800px wide all the time, *unless* there's a long, unbroken string or table. I can't just use overflow in that situation for this layout. I'd need to do this in tables, right?

| SQL + ASP part II: Now I at least have played with some stuff! |
[08 Jul 2008|07:46pm] |
Ok, so I realized how newbie-ish my last question was, now this one is a little more targeted... I've been playing around with MySQL a lot the past few days to really figure out how the databases work and stuff, and I did a lot of poking around the company's intranet site to see exactly what they may use databases for. What it looks like is just an employee search by name or department... then there's another page that has 1, 5, 10, and 20 year anniversaries. Fine, easy, both are the same table with date of hire, etc...
Now my question is, since I've been having a hard time finding it, is there a fairly quick and easy explanation someone has or a tutorial they know of that says how the database is installed on the server, how it's accessed (I'm currently using Mac OSX terminal to access MySQL off my machine, but it's obviously different remotely), and how to let the coding (I'm probably just going to stick with ASP) know which database to grab info from and how to do queries. Most of the work is going to be forms, like putting in names and stuff, but the anniversary page I'm guessing will be more basic, non-form work.
Any info anyone can help me with or a spot that'll get me going? I've tried searching tutorials for ASP and SQL but I've found nothing that actually links the two, or one that I found doesn't tell me how to let the code know which database to use.
Quick side note as well: I forgot to mention I do work in Dreamweaver too, and forgot it can link up to databases... but when I do the manage sites, it can only do PHP with MySQL? Not sure if a server has to be able to support PHP or what.. and what settings to use in Dreamweaver to link the site up with the correct database.

| Python programmer needed: Pywikipedia bot |
[08 Jul 2008|03:34pm] |
I'm looking for assistance in creating a customized bot using Pywikipedia. The program is written in python. and would require some one who knows that language to create the bot. Might be able to provide some compensation for the work being done and would be happy to discuss that.
If you're interested, please feel free to leave a comment, e-mail me at laura at fanhistory.com or use another form of contact listed here.

After wacking myself in the head repeatedly with the company clue-by-four, I find myself no more clueful. Nor do I understand the code any better, so I can't find where the blasted PDF that I'm trying to copy is comming from.
No, don't bother trying to understand any of that. Suffice it to say that I wacked myself in the head with a large piece of lumber and surprisingly, it didn't help.
