The NYT Freakonomics column does a point/counterpoint on marijuana legalization/prohibition. It gets 133 comments; most of these comments are at least moderately thoughtful (i.e. more substantive than "yea moar weed!11!"); NOT ONE of these comments advocates prohibition. Hmmm...

In the end, drugs are just one more way of natural selections, aren't they?

Not sure I understand what you mean by that.

Well, some people chose to use it - and lose the fight.

The article was about marijuana; there are no recorded human deaths attributed to marijuana overdose.

Yeah I know. But I sometimes talk to people who smoke weed more or less frequently. Strong impressions.

If it doesn't kill you, it's not natural selection at work.

The natural selection doesn't mean death every time it works. IMHO.

That's patently untrue. All it has to do is to make it less likely that you'll reproduce. If heavy marijuana use is genetic (or can be environmentally passed to offspring), and stoners are less likely to get laid / get knocked up, then it could, in fact, have a non-trivial natural selection effect.

Not that I buy either premise, but 'death' is not necessary for natural selection by a long shot.

Yeah, true, I was thinking of that; but I doubt it's what the original commenter had in mind (not to mention probably untrue in this case).
